Bernard Francis Peterson

Bernard Francis Peterson of St. Marys, peacefully passed away at age 94 on Sunday, January 9, 2011, after a brief stay at the St. Marys Manor. 

Bernard was born November 29, 1916, in Herington, Kansas, the second child of Peter Christopher and Margaret Ellen (White) Peterson. After graduating in 1938 from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Bernard worked 14 months for Braniff Airways in Dallas, Texas. He then was employed for 9 years at the Glenn L. Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin Corporation) in Baltimore, Maryland. Much of his work was on the development of the Martin AM Mauler, a Naval carrier based bomber-torpedo plane. 

Bernard married Mary Fuller (Jackie) Beasley on February 14, 1942. In 1949, they moved to a farm on the Vermillion River northwest of Belvue to raise their large family. Bernard loved being his own boss and became a successful farmer and stockman. In 1991, Bernard and Jackie moved off the farm and resided in St. Marys. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Bernard was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 657 and Thomas McNeive 4th Degree Assembly. 

Mr. Peterson was preceded in death LaVere Killian, died in 1962. Bernard is survived by his wife, Mary Fuller (Jackie) Peterson, St. Marys, and their ten children: Robert (Margaret) Peterson, Wamego; David (Mary Jean) Peterson, Wamego; John (Roxie) Peterson, Wamego; Michael (Linda) Peterson, Surprise, Arizona; Steven (Mary) Peterson, West Linn, Oregon, Dennis (Patricia) Peterson, Wamego; Anne (Kirk) Bradford, Marysville; Thomas Peterson, Emmett; Katherine (Alan) Hale, Salina; and Jean (Kevin) Gualtieri, Clayton, California. In addition, he has 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, January 14, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Marys. Mr. Peterson will lie in state after 2:00 pm on Thursday at the church where there will be a Prayer Vigil at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St Marys.
